ABOUT WSC

In a city known around the world for comedy, one of Montreal’s most enduring grassroots comedy success stories started with something pretty simple: a microphone, a corner of an Irish pub, and a few comedians who just kept showing up.

The World’s Smallest Comedy Night was founded by Montreal comedians Walter Lyng and Vance Michel, who wanted to create a comedy show with no stakes and no stress. At a time when some comedy rooms felt intimidating or overly competitive, Walter and Vance built something different: a room where experimentation, community, and having fun truly mattered.

Bringing a background in storytelling, producing, and alternative comedy, Walter helped shape the show’s identity during its early years. Together, Vance and Walter created an environment where first-timers could perform alongside experienced comics, giving the show the unpredictable and welcoming energy that would become its trademark.

As the audience grew, so did the team. Zak Kik started as a performer before becoming one of the show’s key hosts and producers. His quick wit, enthusiasm, and commitment to supporting new comics helped expand the World’s Smallest from a weekly open mic into a recognizable part of Montreal’s comedy scene. Alongside Vance, Zak helped launch new showcases, special events, and eventually festival programming.

Troy Stark also became an essential part of the World’s Smallest story. As a performer, host, producer, and collaborator, Troy played a major role in the show’s growth over the years. His work on outdoor shows, festivals, and special events helped transform what began as a small comedy night into a larger creative community.

One of The World’s Smallest’s most successful spin-offs has been Trivia Comedy Night, held every Wednesday. The show combines pub trivia with stand-up comedy, creating a uniquely Montreal night out where comedians, regulars, tourists, and trivia enthusiasts all share the same room. Equal parts game show, comedy showcase, and social gathering, Trivia Comedy Night has become a weekly institution in its own right.
